Jammu and Kashmir witnesses a significant change as separatist leaders participate in the democratic process by filing nominations for the upcoming assembly polls. The Election Commission of India accepted nominations of several separatist leaders, while rejecting at least 35 papers due to various reasons.
Six out of the rejected candidates faced criminal charges, including riots and UAPA sections. Notably, the papers of cleric Sarjan Ahmad Wagay from Zainpora were rejected due to incomplete documents. The scrutiny process for the first phase of polling on September 18 led to the rejection of these nominations.
The validation of candidature for 244 candidates out of 279 revealed that around 35 have criminal antecedents. Independent candidate Bilal Ahmad Nanda and others facing charges will shape the dynamics of the upcoming elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
Separatists in Fray
The growing participation of separatist leaders like Engineer Rashid in the electoral process is a notable shift. Despite the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami, former leaders like Talat Majid Alie and Nazir Ahmad Bhat are contesting as independent candidates.
As the countdown to the elections continues, candidates have until August 30 to withdraw their nominations. The voting for the first phase is scheduled for September 18, with preparations already underway for the second phase on September 25.
