Hiroaki Nishino faced the wrath of nature during Typhoon Faxai in September 2019, which hit Chiba Prefecture with winds up to 200 km/h. Reflecting on the experience, Nishino, who had prepared a disaster-proof home post the 2011 earthquake, felt the unprecedented strength of the typhoon. While his home survived, many in the region weren’t as fortunate, with thousands left without power and water. The extreme heat that followed led to heatstroke-related deaths.
