In a move to rationalize teacher deployment, 419 government schools in Himachal Pradesh with five or fewer students have been merged with nearby schools. Education Minister Rohit Thakur shared this information in the Vidhan Sabha, citing the declining student enrollment in government schools over the past two decades. Factors such as parents opting for private schools and rural-to-urban migration have contributed to this trend.
A total of 361 primary schools with less than five students have been merged with other schools within a 2-km radius, while 58 middle section schools have been merged with ones within a 3-km distance. The minister also highlighted a significant drop in student numbers across primary, middle, and senior secondary schools from 2003 to 2023. In response to these challenges, the state cabinet has approved the closure of schools with zero enrolments and the merger of schools with minimal student counts within a specified radius. This consolidation aims to optimize resources and improve educational outcomes in Himachal Pradesh.
