The Vatican has made history by appointing the first-ever resident Apostolic Nuncio to South Sudan, Archbishop Séamus Patrick Horgan. Horgan, a native of Ireland, arrived in Juba to take up his new role, replacing Archbishop Hubertus Mathews Maria van Megen.
Upon his arrival at Juba Airport, Archbishop Horgan was warmly welcomed by Catholic clergy, government officials, and the faithful. The Papal Nuncio’s presence in South Sudan is expected to strengthen bilateral relations with the Holy See.
In a statement to the media, Archbishop Horgan expressed his admiration for South Sudan, a country close to the heart of Pope Francis. He emphasized the importance of having a resident representative to maintain a stable connection between the Holy See and South Sudan.
Having previously served in various Apostolic Nunciatures around the world, Archbishop Horgan brings a wealth of experience to his new role in South Sudan. His appointment signifies a new chapter in the Vatican’s relationship with the country.
