The Federal Government recently increased the Universal Basic Education matching grants available to state governments for infrastructure projects to N3,554,642,584.46. This decision was announced by Hamid Bobboyi, the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, during a financial training session for SUBEB Chairmen and Board Secretaries in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The funding boost is part of the 2024 Appropriation Bill, with each state now receiving N3,554,642,584.46 in matching grants. This amount, a substantial increase from previous years, is set to support basic education projects in Nigeria. Bobboyi emphasized the importance of state governments providing an equivalent counterpart fund for project execution.
With an estimated 46 million children enrolled in schools nationwide, Bobboyi underscored the need to address challenges to reduce the number of out-of-school children. The meeting, attended by SUBEB officials from various states, focused on collaborative efforts to enhance basic education in the country.
