The Hillerod District Court in Denmark Makes Ruling in Indian Extradition Case
The Hillerod District Court in Denmark has made a significant decision in the trial of Danish citizen Niels Holck. The court rejected an Indian extradition request for the 62-year-old, who is accused by Indian authorities of supplying arms to West Bengali rebels in 1995.
Despite India’s promises of a new detention facility and guarantees of safety, the court ruled that extraditing Holck would violate Denmark’s extradition act due to a risk of breaching the European Convention on Human Rights.
Holck, who admitted to parachuting weapons to West Bengalis in the past, has been the subject of a long extradition battle between India and Denmark. The case has strained relations between the two countries for years.
Defense lawyer Jonas Christoffersen expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision and hopes Holck can now move on with his life. Prosecutors have three days to appeal the ruling, but after three separate court victories in Holck’s favor, Christoffersen is confident in the Danish legal system’s protection of his client.
The extradition saga continues to unfold, with the future of Holck’s legal battles uncertain.
