Brazilian Judge Attempts to Block Elon Musk’s Starlink in Ongoing Feud
Brazilian Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes has taken a drastic step in his ongoing feud with billionaire Elon Musk by moving to block the financial accounts of Musk’s Starlink, which could result in the social media platform X being taken down in the country.
Starlink has confirmed receiving an order from the judge to halt financial transactions in Brazil and has vowed to address the order legally. De Moraes’s decision is a response to the lack of legal representation in Brazil for X, according to a Supreme Court source.
Musk has condemned de Moraes’s actions as censorship, particularly regarding the judge’s request to block certain accounts on the social network accused of spreading misinformation. De Moraes had previously ordered Musk to appoint a legal representative for X in Brazil within 24 hours, or face suspension of the platform in the country.
Crackdown
This latest move is part of a long-standing battle between Musk and de Moraes over the spread of misinformation in Brazil. The judge has previously suspended over 100 X accounts, including those of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, for peddling unfounded claims about electoral fraud.
As the feud continues, Musk accuses de Moraes of violating free speech rights, while the judge maintains that his actions are necessary to combat disinformation in the country.
