The European Union is considering imposing sanctions on Israeli ministers for inciting hatred toward Palestinians, according to EU diplomat Josep Borrell. The proposed sanctions are in response to statements made by the ministers that violate international law and encourage war crimes.
However, the proposal faces opposition from EU member states, with Hungary, Austria, and the Czech Republic defending Israel’s right to self-defense. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock noted that any further sanctions would require unanimous backing.
The individuals targeted for sanctions include Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, both known for their far-right views. Smotrich caused controversy by suggesting the starvation of 2 million Gazans, while Ben Gvir has a history of making inflammatory statements.
Despite the division among EU states, Borrell emphasized the importance of upholding international law and human rights. The sanctions, if approved, could lead to travel bans to the EU and the seizure of assets held within the bloc.
