The UN’s humanitarian efforts in Gaza are being disrupted by Israel’s repeated evacuation orders, limiting access to essential aid for Palestinians in the besieged enclave. Recently, an evacuation order forced Palestinians out of Deir al-Balah, halting UN operations just as a polio vaccination campaign was set to begin for over 640,000 children in Gaza.
The fear is that without a pause for humanitarian aid, the spread of the poliovirus could worsen due to unsanitary conditions and crowded camps in Gaza. Despite some cooperation from the Israeli army in delivering vaccines, ongoing bombings and evacuations pose challenges for effective immunization efforts.
Human Rights Watch has also warned that Israel’s attacks on healthcare infrastructure and obstruction of aid in Gaza may lead to a catastrophic polio outbreak if urgent assistance is not provided. This situation not only threatens the well-being of the population in Gaza but also hinders the UN’s ability to carry out vital humanitarian work in the region.
