The labour department in Limpopo took action by issuing prohibition notices to the labour centres in Thohoyandou and Makhado in Louis Trichardt. These notices required the offices to remain closed until the identified issues were rectified. Occupational health and safety inspectors would then conduct follow-up inspections to determine if the prohibition notice could be lifted.
Additionally, a building in Bela-Bela accommodating government offices was also issued a prohibition notice due to the immediate danger of collapse posed by major wall cracks. The Public Servants’ Association supported these notices, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safety of employees and the public.
Phaswane Tladi, the chief director of provincial operations in Limpopo, expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the closures but reiterated that the health and safety of all individuals was a top priority. The PSA condemned the department for the safety lapses, emphasizing the need for adherence to high standards in all labour centres.
Efforts were underway to swiftly address noncompliance issues highlighted by OHS inspectors to create safe working environments for employees and clients. The department aimed to set a positive example by prioritizing compliance and safety in all workplaces.
