The Power of Telegram: Social Unrest, Cybercriminals, and Anonymity

Across the globe, from Iran to Thailand to Belarus, protests and resistance movements have erupted, challenging authoritarian regimes and sparking widespread social unrest. What do these movements have in common? They were largely organized on Telegram, the messaging service that has become a go-to platform for activism, propaganda, and extremism.

With over 900 million users, Telegram offers unique features such as unlimited chat group sizes, high levels of anonymity, and the ability to function in low-internet environments. However, despite its popularity, Telegram has serious security vulnerabilities, with content not being end-to-end encrypted and data stored on the company’s servers.

Despite these drawbacks, Telegram remains a popular platform for anti-authoritarian movements due to its non-US background and the reputation of its Russian founder, Pavel Durov. However, Durov’s constant relocation of the company’s headquarters raises concerns about users’ recourse in case of legal issues or online fraud.

As tech expert Jürgen Schmidt advises, caution should be exercised when using Telegram for confidential communications, given its privacy concerns and potential security risks.
