South Sudan Opposition Alliance: A Tale of Leadership and Challenges

By Moses Garang

The South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) seemed like a powerhouse at the start of the peace agreement implementation but has faced challenges in living up to expectations. Led by Vice President Hussein Abdelbagi Ayii, the alliance has seen divided opinions and a lack of effective leadership.

Costello Garang Riny Lual, a respected veteran politician, emerges as a potential solution to SSOA’s leadership woes. With a track record of integrity and leadership, Costello Garang Riny Lual could be the alliance’s golden bullet for success. Born in Aweil in Northern Bahr el-Ghazal, he has a history of active involvement in the SPLM/A and various foundations.

In contrast, VP Abdelbagi’s leadership has been criticized for lacking vision and development plans for South Sudan. Despite being chosen as a vice president, Abdelbagi has not effectively championed service delivery, leaving crucial sectors like healthcare and education in limbo.

SSOA still has a chance at success with leaders like Costello Garang Riny Lual, known for his purpose-driven leadership style. As elections loom, Costello Garang Riny Lual could be the key to SSOA’s success as a unified bloc.
