Special counsel Jack Smith releases updated indictment in Trump election probe | Latest Donald Trump News

A newly revised indictment against former President Donald Trump has been released by federal prosecutors, focusing on his alleged attempt to interfere in the 2020 election. The indictment, a response to a recent Supreme Court ruling, now zeroes in on Trump’s role as a political candidate rather than interactions with the Department of Justice.

Despite the changes, the core accusation remains the same: that Trump sought to undermine the election results and overturn his loss to Joe Biden. This indictment is one of four cases against Trump, making him the first US president to face criminal charges and be convicted.

The Supreme Court’s decision granting immunity to official presidential acts has influenced the indictment, leading to a revised version that removes certain references singled out in the ruling. Trump has reacted strongly to the reworked indictment on his Truth Social account, denouncing it as a politically motivated attack.

Special counsel Jack Smith, leading the prosecution, emphasized that the revisions reflect efforts to adhere to the Supreme Court’s instructions. The case is in the hands of US District Judge Tanya Chutkan, with a trial unlikely before the November election.
