In a bid to tackle the rising issue of sexually explicit deepfake content, South Korean authorities have announced plans to seek assistance from platforms like Telegram. Following reports of deepfake images and videos of South Korean women circulating on Telegram chatrooms, measures will be taken to actively delete and block such content.
The Korea Communications Standards Commission will double the number of regulatory personnel monitoring digital sex crimes and establish a 24-hour hotline for victims. The Korean National Police Agency will also launch a crackdown on online sex crimes over the next seven months.
A consultative body will be set up to improve communication with social media companies regarding the removal of deepfake content. Companies like Telegram, X, Meta’s Facebook, Instagram, and Google’s YouTube will be asked for cooperation.
The number of deepfake sex crime cases in South Korea has increased, with most perpetrators being teenagers. Victims, often female, include school students and female soldiers. Requests for content takedowns have also risen, with over 6,400 cases reported this year. The crackdown comes amidst the arrest of Telegram’s founder on charges related to child pornography.
