Reporters Without Borders condemns rising arrests of investigative journalists in Nigeria

The Network Against Corruption and Trafficking (NACAT) has condemned the increasing arrest of investigative journalists in Nigeria by the present administration. They highlighted that this assault on press freedom undermines democracy and violates fundamental rights. The group criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for disregarding the Constitution’s guarantee of freedom of expression and press freedom.

Nigeria, as a signatory to international treaties, recognizes the press’s role in maintaining democracy. NACAT expressed concern over the unlawful arrest of journalists and emphasized the vital role they play in holding power accountable.

NACAT particularly highlighted the case of Isaac Bristol, an investigative journalist detained by the Nigerian Police. They pointed out the demanding surety conditions set for his release, stating that it leads to corruption. The group also decried the arrest of other journalists, emphasizing that it threatens press freedom and democracy.

NACAT demanded justice and accountability for the journalists, calling on the international community to support press freedom in Nigeria. They emphasized the importance of protecting journalists as watchdogs of society and defenders of human rights.
