After moderate to heavy rainfall in Karachi, the city police were put on alert as more rain was predicted by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The deep depression system approaching from Rajasthan brought light to moderate rainfall in Karachi and other cities on Monday evening.
PMD’s chief meteorologist, Sardar Sarfaraz, stated that the system is intense and expected to bring very heavy rainfall to lower Sindh, with Karachi likely to receive around 150mm to 200mm during the four-day spell. The police were instructed to take precautionary measures, provide alternate routes for traffic, and assist the public.
The public was advised to stay away from electric wires and poles, and in case of emergencies, call the Madadgar 15 helpline. The city administration declared a “rain emergency” and the Mayor of Karachi urged institutions to prepare for the forecasted heavy rains.
Monsoon rains, crucial for agriculture but also causing weather-related disasters, have been increasing in frequency and severity due to climate change. Urban flooding in cities like Karachi disrupts daily life, highlighting the importance of preparedness and safety measures.
