In eastern Sudan, at least 30 people have been reported dead and 20 villages wiped out due to surging waters breaking through the Arbaat Dam. The region, already affected by months of civil war, faced devastating floods caused by torrential rains. The dam’s collapse, just 40 km north of Port Sudan, has left the area unrecognizable with destroyed infrastructure and missing individuals.
Approximately 50,000 people’s homes were impacted by the flooding, and the United Nations reported that the number only represents the west side of the dam as the east remains inaccessible. The Arbaat Dam served as the primary water source for Port Sudan, a critical location for aid deliveries in the country.
The aftermath of the disaster has left the area in chaos, with significant damage to essential services. The situation is dire, with rescue efforts ongoing to locate missing individuals and provide support to the affected communities.
