MK Elazar Stern victorious in defamation lawsuit against Guy Lerer, Channel 13 – Israel News

The Tel Aviv District Court recently ruled that journalist Guy Lerer, Reshet, and Channel 13 must pay Member of Knesset Elazar Stern a total of NIS 410,000 in damages for defamation. The court found the defendants guilty in six instances where they misrepresented Stern’s handling of sexual harassment complaints.

The court emphasized that the defendants’ failure to provide a valid defense for their publications led to the conclusion that their actions did not qualify for legal protection. The timing of these defamatory statements during Stern’s candidacy for a prominent public role worsened their impact.

Stern, who was a candidate for the Jewish Agency chairman position, left the race in 2021 due to false accusations of mishandling complaints. The court criticized the defendants for their irresponsible journalism and lack of proper corrective procedures.

In response to the verdict, Stern reaffirmed his commitment to addressing sexual harassment and emphasized the importance of accountable journalism. He called on the media to uphold public trust and encouraged individuals to fight for justice against defamation.

Overall, the court’s decision concluded a long legal battle, with Stern advocating for responsible media practices and the protection of individuals in public service. It serves as a reminder of the impact of misinformation and the need for ethical journalism.
