The letter, submitted to the committee led by Republican Jordan, comes ahead of a tightly contested presidential election. Zuckerberg’s acknowledgment of government pressure to censor COVID-19 content was seen as a win for free speech by Republicans.
The White House defended its actions during the pandemic, while Zuckerberg vowed to maintain neutrality in funding nonprofits working on electoral infrastructure. Former President Trump seized upon Zuckerberg’s statement to support his election fraud claims.
The letter also addressed Facebook’s handling of a controversial story about Hunter Biden, acknowledging a temporary demotion that was later deemed unnecessary. Zuckerberg affirmed changes to their policy regarding such situations.
