Mauritania and Spain collaborate on migrant management

During a recent visit by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to Mauritania, both countries agreed to cooperate in managing migrant flows. With Spain facing a surge in migrant arrivals, the two nations pledged to work together to ensure safe, orderly, and regular migration, as well as humane treatment for migrants.

Spain’s coastguard frequently rescues African migrants on the perilous Atlantic route towards the Canary Islands. Thousands of deaths and disappearances occur yearly due to strong currents and overcrowded, unsafe boats.

In addition to the joint declaration, Spain and Mauritania signed a memorandum of understanding for a pilot project to select Mauritanian workers to work in Spain, focusing on young people and women in circular migration programs. Sanchez’s trip also includes visits to The Gambia and Senegal, key countries in the migration crisis.

Mauritania is set to tighten legislation on illegal migration, with Madrid estimating around 200,000 people waiting in the country to reach the Canaries. The increasing migrant arrivals in Spain highlight the urgency of collaboration on migrant management between Mauritania and Spain.
