Flamingo Heights, situated in Lansdowne, Cape Town, is a unique informal settlement with 100 homes that have access to running water, sanitation, and electricity. Although the settlement boasts some basic amenities, residents face challenges such as unemployment, blocked drains, and electricity outages. Additionally, crime, substance abuse, and domestic violence are prevalent issues in the community.

The settlement was established in 2014 and restructured by the City of Cape Town to create better living conditions. Residents, mostly unemployed, appreciate the improvements but still struggle with blocked drains, rat infestations, and intermittent electricity supply. Despite these challenges, efforts are being made to address resident concerns, such as electricity faults, by local officials.

Residents like Sheila Siedras and Lenrika Dekoker share their experiences, highlighting the complex realities of living in Flamingo Heights. While challenges persist, the community remains resilient, with initiatives like the Little Paradise crèche providing essential support to children in need.
