Exciting news from the World Health Organization (WHO) as the first batch of mpox vaccines has been delivered to Africa, starting with Nigeria. This signifies a strong show of international solidarity in the fight against global health crises.
Nigeria received 10,000 doses of the Jynneos (MVA) vaccine, generously donated by the US government, to combat the viral outbreak affecting multiple countries in the region. The WHO has declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern, prompting swift action to protect public health.
With Nigeria reporting 786 suspected cases and 39 confirmed cases of mpox as of August 10, 2024, the vaccines will be distributed in states with the highest burden of the disease. Additionally, other African countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and East African nations, are preparing to receive their share of vaccine doses.
Despite some delays in the delivery process, Western partners like the EU and the US have pledged support with a total of 380,000 doses of mpox vaccines. This collaborative effort highlights the importance of global cooperation in addressing public health emergencies.
