FACh Triggers Alert Over Unidentified Aircraft Near Strait of Magellan
When the F-5s reached the area there were no signs of the intruding aircraft
Chile’s Air Force (FACh) scrambled two F-5 fighter jets from the Chabunco air base in Punta Arenas when an unidentified aircraft was detected near the Strait of Magellan. Despite initial reports suggesting the aircraft may have come from Argentina, Defense Minister Maya Fernández neither confirmed nor denied this speculation.
The unidentified aircraft was spotted flying at 3,000 feet between Mount Aymond and the Strait of Magellan. However, the Chilean jets found no trace of the intruding plane upon arrival at the location.
Fernández stated, “The Air Force activated protocols to safeguard our sovereignty. An investigation is underway to determine the origin of the unidentified aircraft.” Interior Minister Carolina Tohá revealed that the intruding aircraft had left Chilean airspace by the time the F-5s arrived.
Argentina, Chile, and the United States are planning joint maneuvers in the area in October. The F-5 fighter jets, known as Tiger III, have been in service in Chile since 1976.
