The Edo State Government has reported eight suspected cases of cholera in the state, with 16 cases previously reported the week before. Despite this, the government assures the public that there is no need to panic as they are actively addressing the situation with support from the World Health Organisation.

All affected individuals are being closely monitored, along with their contacts. Additionally, the state has recorded 226 cases of Lassa fever out of over 2,300 suspected cases, resulting in 36 deaths this year.

Speaking in Benin City, the Director of Public Health, Dr. Ojeifo Stephenson, emphasized the state’s preparedness for emergencies and swift response to disease outbreaks. He highlighted the collaborative efforts with WHO in investigating and managing the cholera cases at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

Dr. Stephenson stressed the importance of maintaining hygiene and seeking immediate medical attention for suspected cases. The state government is also focusing on eradicating the causative agent of Lassa fever to ensure a Lassa fever-free Edo State.
