Brazil Remains Mpox-Free Following Ruling Out of Suspected Case
A recent suspected case of mpox in Brazil has been ruled out after a traveler arriving at Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport tested negative for the disease but positive for chickenpox. The São Paulo Health Department confirmed the diagnosis after conducting an examination at the Adolfo Lutz Institute. The government issued an epidemiological mpox alert prior to ruling out the case.
The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) renewed the registration exemption for the Jynneos and Imvanex vaccines purchased by the Health Ministry to prevent mpox. Anvisa’s decision allows for the emergency acquisition of 25,000 doses of the vaccine from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in response to the international public health concern.
The Jynneos vaccine, manufactured in Denmark, and Imvanex vaccine, produced in Germany, are crucial in preventing the spread of mpox and have been authorized for use by adults. This decision comes as Brazil remains vigilant in monitoring and addressing potential outbreaks of the disease.
