Bangladesh’s caretaker government lifted the ban on the main Islamic party and its affiliates, stating no evidence of their involvement in terrorist activities. The ban was imposed by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, accusing Jamaat-e-Islami of inciting violence during protests against her government.
The new government found no specific evidence linking Jamaat to terrorist activities and issued a gazette notification overturning the ban. Jamaat has refuted the accusations and deemed the ban as unlawful and unconstitutional.
Since 2013, Jamaat has been unable to participate in elections due to its registration conflicting with Bangladesh’s secular constitution. The party plans to appeal at the Supreme Court to regain its political status.
