The Fate of Belarus Activist Andrey Gnyot Hangs in the Balance in Serbian Court

Andrey Gnyot, a Belarus activist, journalist, and director, faces extradition to Minsk where he is accused of tax evasion. However, his lawyers argue that the charges are politically motivated due to his previous opposition to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Gnyot was detained in Serbia on an INTERPOL warrant after arriving from Thailand, where he had been living after fleeing Belarus.

Despite spending months in a Serbian jail, Gnyot’s fate now rests on a new appeal in the Belgrade court. Following a failed extradition attempt in December 2023, Gnyot was placed under house arrest and fitted with an electronic ankle bracelet. The Supreme Court of Serbia ruled in favor of extradition, prompting another appeal from Gnyot and his legal team.

The international community has shown support for Gnyot, with organizations like Amnesty International calling on Serbian officials to halt the extradition process. Demonstrations have been held in multiple countries, and prominent artists have signed an open letter advocating for Gnyot’s release.
