In Yemen, heavy flooding caused by torrential rains overnight has led to the destruction of homes and left at least 24 people missing, as reported by authorities on Wednesday. The floods in Al-Mahwit, a province west of the capital Sanaa controlled by Iran-backed Huthi rebels, triggered landslides that swept through several homes, resulting in the destruction of seven homes in the Melhan district.
Although authorities have not yet reported casualties, images circulating on social media show corpses wrapped in blankets after the floods. The mountains of western Yemen are prone to heavy seasonal rainfall, with flash flooding since late July resulting in the deaths of 60 people and affecting 268,000 individuals, according to the United Nations.
As the central and western provinces have been warned of more severe weather to come, the World Health Organization has forecast increased rainfall in the coming months, particularly in the central highlands, Red Sea coastal areas, and southern uplands. Climate change is exacerbating the situation, with the frequency and intensity of seasonal rains on the rise in the Yemeni highlands.
As the war-torn country continues to grapple with the impacts of conflict, including a weakened medical infrastructure, international aid is crucial. The United Nations has highlighted the urgent need for $4.9 million to enhance emergency response efforts in Yemen.
