20 killed in Sudan camp by paramilitary shelling: committee

Sudan has been embroiled in a civil war since April 2023, resulting in millions of people being forced into displacement camps. Recently, tragedy struck as at least 20 individuals were killed by Sudanese paramilitaries in an attack on a camp for displaced people in Darfur. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been surrounding El-Fasher, aiming to capture the last major Darfur city under their control. The local resistance committee in El-Fasher reported the casualties and pointed fingers at the RSF for intentionally shelling the camp’s market and square.

Due to the intense fighting, the Zamzam camp near El-Fasher is facing famine, with little to no aid reaching the area. Despite limited assistance, the United Nations managed to deliver aid to over 119,000 people in Darfur, where more than five million individuals are internally displaced. Amidst this crisis, half a million people in Zamzam are at risk of starvation.

The conflict in Sudan has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, with some regions facing famine according to the United Nations.
