In a recent turn of events, Colin Crooks, the UK ambassador to South Korea, has decided to skip the upcoming Global Korea Forum (GKF) hosted by the Ministry of Unification. The reason? The majority of speakers at the forum are male, contradicting the values of gender equality. The British Embassy in Seoul released a statement expressing the difficulty of Ambassador Crooks’ participation due to these reasons.

The GKF, an expanded international conference held annually by the Ministry of Unification since 2010, aims to promote diverse perspectives on Korean peninsula issues. However, the lack of gender diversity among speakers has drawn criticism. Despite efforts by the Ministry to invite experts regardless of gender, the overwhelming absence of female participants has resulted in a predominantly male lineup.

As the controversy unfolds, it raises important questions about inclusivity and representation in international forums. The Ministry of Unification clarified its efforts to prioritize gender diversity but faced challenges in securing a balanced speaker roster. This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing work needed to ensure equal representation in global discourse.
