The United Arab Emirates has requested access to their citizen, Telegram founder Pavel Durov, who was arrested in Paris for cyber crime investigations. The UAE is prioritizing the welfare of their citizens and is seeking consular services for Durov.
The Paris prosecutor has extended Durov’s police custody for further investigations related to illicit activities on his messaging app. Durov holds citizenship in multiple countries, including France, Russia, and St Kitts and Nevis.
The Russian embassy has also requested access to Durov, while officials have criticized the arrest as politically motivated. However, French President Macron has defended the arrest as upholding the rule of law and freedom of expression.
Telegram has denied any wrongdoing and stated that they comply with EU laws. They emphasized their moderation policies and claimed they are constantly improving industry standards.
Under French law, Durov must be either charged or released by Wednesday evening. The case has garnered international attention and raised concerns about freedom of communication and online platform regulations.
