The Shizuoka prefectural government is considering implementing fees for climbers ascending Mount Fuji on three trails starting next summer to control access, following neighboring Yamanashi Prefecture’s lead. Yamanashi has already taken steps to discourage dangerous activities like “bullet climbing,” where climbers summit the peak without proper rest. Mount Fuji straddles both prefectures.
Currently, Shizuoka only requires hikers to submit ascent plans through a registration system. Due to the trails not being on prefectural land, regulating climbers has been challenging. Shizuoka aims to study access limitations until November, with plans to introduce an ordinance for entrance fees and set aside 37 million yen for control costs.
On the other hand, Yamanashi has implemented a gate closure for the Yoshida trail and charges 2,000 yen per climber, capping daily hikers at 4,000. The efforts aim to manage the popular trail effectively.
Both prefectures are taking steps to ensure safe and sustainable climbing experiences on Mount Fuji, safeguarding the iconic peak for future generations.
