Last weekend, São Paulo faced a catastrophic wave of fires causing R$1 billion ($180 million) in agricultural damages. The state’s Secretary of Agriculture and Supply reported significant losses with flames engulfing 3,837 properties across 144 cities, impacting key agricultural sectors like cattle, sugarcane, fruit, rubber, and beekeeping.
Environment protection areas were also affected, disrupting ecological balance. State departments are evaluating the extensive damage, with a crisis management center established in Ribeirão Preto for recovery. The government allocated R$100 million ($18 million) to aid affected farmers through the Agricultural Expansion Fund, offering credits up to R$25,000 ($4,500) to alleviate losses and support emergency operations.
The fires, suspected to be arson, ignited on August 22 and spread to 25 cities. Although extinguished by August 26, 48 cities remain on high alert. The incident highlights the severe impact of environmental disasters on economic stability and conservation efforts in this vital Brazilian agricultural region.
