Strained Relations: Lavrov’s Views on Paris, Gaza Conflict, and Ukraine
During a recent news conference in Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed concerns about the deteriorating relations between Moscow and Paris. He pointed to actions by French authorities that limit free speech and respect for journalism as reasons for the strained ties.
Lavrov also addressed the arrest of businessman Pavel Durov in France, the founder of the popular messaging app Telegram. He alleged that Durov’s detention was politically motivated and aimed at gaining access to encryption codes.
On the conflict in Gaza, Lavrov suggested that some parties involved may have a vested interest in prolonging the fighting for geopolitical gain. He condemned Israeli statements labeling all Gazan civilians as “terrorists” and called for an end to the conflict, citing violations of international law.
Regarding Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s remarks on Western interference, Lavrov dismissed them as “blackmail” and criticized the West for escalating tensions with Moscow. He emphasized the importance of honest dialogue in resolving conflicts.
Yemeni Foreign Minister Shaya Mohsen al-Zindani also expressed interest in Russia’s role in resolving crises in the Middle East, highlighting the need for political and diplomatic solutions.
