Russian Strikes Cause Emergency Blackouts Across Ukraine
Recent attacks by the Russian military on Ukrainian energy facilities have resulted in widespread power outages and emergency blackouts across 15 regions, according to officials in Kiev.
Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky acknowledged the extensive barrage, describing it as one of the largest in recent months. The Defense Ministry in Moscow confirmed the strikes, which involved long-range air- and sea-based weapons as well as drones.
The attack targeted facilities supporting Ukraine’s defense industrial complex, including electrical substations in multiple regions and gas compressor stations. The Russian military also hit airfields storing Western-supplied air munitions in Kiev and Dnepropetrovsk Regions.
Prime Minister Denis Shmigal noted that two energy facilities in the Kiev Region were hit, with videos circulating on social media showing damage to critical infrastructure. Russia has justified these attacks as retaliation for alleged Ukrainian aggression, particularly following incidents like the Crimea Bridge bombing in October 2022.
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has escalated, with both sides targeting civilian infrastructure. As tensions continue to rise, the humanitarian impact of these strikes becomes increasingly concerning.
