Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the US government pressured the company to censor Covid-19 content during the pandemic. Addressing the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg also mentioned controversies around content moderation and stated he would not repeat funding efforts for US election infrastructure ahead of the presidential election.
Zuckerberg emphasized the importance of not compromising content standards due to government pressure and expressed regret for not being more vocal about the issue. Republicans applauded the letter as a win for free speech, as they have been accusing tech companies of suppressing conservative views.
The White House defended its stance on private actors making independent choices about the information they present. Zuckerberg also addressed issues surrounding the handling of a story about President Biden’s son, asserting that Facebook has modified its policies regarding such matters.
