Nicolas Maduro Shuffles Cabinet Amid Controversy Over Re-Election
Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro has made significant changes to his cabinet amidst ongoing protests and doubts surrounding his recent re-election, which many opponents have labeled as fraudulent.
In a televised announcement, Maduro appointed new ministers to key positions including finance, oil, and interior. Anabel Pereira takes over as finance minister, while Hector Obregon will lead the state oil company PDVSA. Vice President Delcy Rodriguez will now oversee the oil ministry in addition to her current responsibilities.
The reshuffling also includes familiar faces such as Yvan Gil and Vladimir Padrino staying in their roles as foreign and defense ministers, respectively. Diosdado Cabello, a close ally of Maduro, returns to the cabinet as interior, justice, and peace minister.
Maduro described the changes as a “profound renovation” of the government to meet the needs of the people. However, tensions continue to escalate in Venezuela following the disputed election results, with calls for transparency and protests against the government’s response to dissenting voices.
Despite pressure from both domestic and international actors, Maduro shows no signs of relinquishing power, setting the stage for further unrest in the embattled nation.
