Journalist criticizes slow trial in church statue case

Frustration Mounts as Torit Court Delays Trial for Journalist Sisto Gideon Ohide

A journalist working for Singaita FM in Kapoeta, Eastern Equatoria State, expressed frustration over the delay by the Torit court to try him for a defamatory case filed by the local Catholic Diocese. Sisto Gideon Ohide was arrested in August 2024 following a story he aired about a dispute between the Diocese and a woman. Despite being released on bail, he is yet to appear in court for trial.

Ohide shared his dismay with Radio Tamazuj, revealing that the church had expressed willingness to resolve the issue out of court. However, he was not invited to the meeting, raising concerns about the delay in the court hearing affecting his communication with his boss. The church’s decision to take legal action instead of seeking forgiveness was criticized by Eastern Equatoria State Civil Society Organizations Network.

Despite efforts to contact the church lawyer for comments, there was no immediate success. Ohide remains determined to clear his reputation in court, highlighting the need for a fair trial to resolve the matter.
