High-level talks in Cairo aimed at securing a cease-fire and hostage deal to temporarily end the ongoing conflict in Gaza concluded without a final agreement, according to a U.S. official. Despite this, discussions will continue at lower levels in the coming days to address remaining gaps.
The talks, involving CIA Director William Burns and Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency head, were described as “constructive,” with parties focused on reaching an implementable agreement. A Hamas delegation was briefed by mediators but did not directly partake in negotiations.
Simultaneously, Israel and Hezbollah engaged in a heavy exchange of fire, avoiding escalation into a full-scale war. Leaders hinted at reserving the right to respond in the future, pending the effectiveness of the attacks. Both sides claimed to target military sites only, with casualties reported on both ends.
As international leaders monitor the situation closely, hopes for de-escalation grow. The U.S. and other mediators stress the significance of a Gaza cease-fire in preventing a broader conflict in the Middle East.
