Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s government is facing a lawsuit for its inadequate efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote carbon sinks, as reported by YLE. Environmental and human rights organizations argue that the government is not meeting climate obligations set by the EU and the carbon-neutrality target for 2035. This violation of the climate act, amended in July 2022, threatens important climate goals.
Experts warn that Finland is falling short of its climate targets without additional measures. In a recent report, the Finnish Climate Change Panel highlighted that government decisions are leading to increased transport emissions and failing to protect carbon sinks. The collapse of carbon sinks in forests due to intensive logging has further exacerbated the situation.
The lawsuit demands urgent action from the government and emphasizes the infringement on basic human rights. The failure to meet climate targets poses a severe risk to the environment and future generations. The legal battle mirrors similar cases globally, where courts have recognized the violation of human rights due to climate inaction.
