Former Malaysian Prime Minister Charged with Sedition for Insulting Previous King
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, now the opposition leader, has been charged with sedition for allegedly insulting the country’s previous king during an election campaign rally. He pleaded not guilty in court and could face up to three years in prison if found guilty.
During his campaign, Muhyiddin questioned why he was not invited to be prime minister by the then-King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah after the 2022 elections. The monarchy in Malaysia plays a ceremonial role but is highly respected by the Malays. Sultan Abdullah’s son criticized Muhyiddin’s remarks, calling them dangerous and divisive.
Muhyiddin has denied insulting the royalty, claiming his comments were factual. The case has not elicited a response from Sultan Abdullah, who was succeeded by Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar in January.
