Close encounter with Dhaka protests for flag-seller

In a surprising turn of events, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh resigned and fled the country amidst intense anti-government protests. Dubbed as a “day of victory” by protesters, the fall of the government led to attacks on members of the Hindu community. Amidst the chaos, a flag-seller named Suman witnessed an unprecedented increase in demand for headbands and flags, selling them at three times their regular price on August 5.

Suman, a resident of old Dhaka, has been selling flags since 2018 and saw record sales on the day of the protests. He sold around 1,500 flags and 500 headbands, surpassing his sales even on cricket match days. His humble beginnings as an electrician led him to work in a flag-making factory before eventually starting his own business.

Despite his Indian heritage, Suman proudly identifies as a Bangladeshi by birth and heart, emphasizing his deep connection to Dhaka. With a family of six siblings, Suman’s resilience and hard work have enabled him to support his loved ones and thrive in his small business.
