Police in Australia recently wrapped up a nationwide operation targeting illegal drug trafficking and organized crime, resulting in more than 1,600 arrests. The operation, known as Operation Vitreus, took place from August 19 to August 23 and also involved law enforcement from New Zealand.
Authorities highlighted the severe impact of illicit drugs on society, including road trauma, violence, and other criminal activities. During the operation, police seized over 1,400 kg of drugs, 2,500 cannabis plants, 71 guns, and more than $2.2 million in cash.
The seized drugs included heroin, methylamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA, and ketamine. The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission identified cannabis and methylamphetamine as the most-consumed drugs in the country, with a recent increase in the use of nitazenes, posing a significant risk to public health.
With a focus on challenging attitudes towards drug use, law enforcement remains committed to combating the demand for illicit substances in Australia.
