Australia has announced plans to cap foreign student numbers starting next year, in response to concerns over immigration and the country’s education industry. Education Minister Jason Clare revealed that the limit for new international students in 2025 will be set at 270,000 across universities, higher education, and vocational training.
This decision, aimed at balancing student distribution among institutions, follows the realization that foreign students contributed over AU$42 billion to Australian universities in 2023. The breakdown for 2025 will see 145,000 new students for universities, 30,000 for other higher education providers, and 95,000 for vocational education and training.
Although the move has sparked mixed reactions, with concerns over the impact on university funding and the broader economy, the government is standing firm on the decision. With a pledge to crack down on fraudulent practices in the sector, including the closure of over 150 “ghost colleges,” Australia aims to protect its international education industry from exploitation.
