The spread of illegal synthetic content on Telegram targeting acquaintances for malicious purposes has prompted the ruling Democratic Party of Korea to take action. Party leader Lee Jae-myung has instructed the establishment of a task force to strengthen penalties for those involved in the creation and dissemination of deepfake content. This move comes in response to the serious impact of deepfake crimes, extending beyond university students to even school teachers.
During an internal policy meeting, Kim Yong-min, the deputy head of the party’s policy committee, highlighted the need to revise existing laws to better investigate and prosecute deepfake offenders. Concerns were raised about the psychological impact on teenagers forced to delete their own photos from social media out of fear. The absence of effective action by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family has led the Democratic Party to take the lead in addressing this pressing issue.
Lawmaker Mo Kyung-jong emphasized the societal importance of confronting the pain and anxiety experienced by victims of deepfake crimes, calling on the government and judiciary to intensify efforts to combat this growing threat.
