In a recent development, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Annapurna Devi has reached out to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, urging her to expedite work on women safety schemes and projects. Devi highlighted the lack of established emergency helplines and pending fast track special courts in the state, despite a high pendency of rape and POCSO cases. This comes in response to Banerjee’s letter to the Prime Minister addressing the concerning state of women safety in the country.
The WCD minister emphasized the importance of Fast Track Special Courts for the expeditious trial and disposal of cases under the POCSO Act, stressing the need for their operationalization in the state. Despite West Bengal’s commitment to participate in the scheme, only a fraction of the allocated courts have been made operational, leaving a significant number of cases pending.
Devi underscored the significance of effective implementation of legal provisions and governmental initiatives for women’s safety, urging the state government to prioritize these measures. The call for action on women safety initiatives resonates with the ongoing nationwide dialogue on ensuring a secure environment for women in the country.
