Student associations and activists in Bengaluru gathered at Freedom Park to protest against the rising cases of gender-based and sexual violence in the country. Over 200 students from St Joseph’s University participated in a silent protest and candlelight vigil to honor the Kolkata doctor who was sexually assaulted and murdered. The event featured placards, songs, and skits raising awareness about sexual violence and women’s safety, with university management also showing support.
Simultaneously, activist groups like Bahutva Karnataka and Fridays for Future joined the protest, highlighting how rape is used as a political tool across different sections of society. The demonstration also addressed sexual violence against the LGBTQIA+ community and emphasized the need for systemic change to support survivors.
The collective of organizations involved in the protest called for government-led sensitization programs, gender-sensitive sex education in schools, measures to protect sexual minorities, and the criminalization of sexual violence against men. They advocated for a world where survivors are believed and men are allies in the movement. The protest aimed to bring attention to these critical issues and push for meaningful change.
