North Korea protests against China’s border telecoms plans in rare challenge

North Korea has openly opposed China’s plans to install telecommunications facilities near their border, expressing dissatisfaction with Beijing’s lack of consultation beforehand. This rare diplomatic move hints at strained bilateral communication between the two closely tied countries.

The dispute arose after an email obtained by reporters revealed China’s intention to set up 191 facilities for FM radio broadcasting without prior notice to North Korea, causing interference in border areas.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of North Korea’s relationship with China, but recent activities with Russia, like a strategic partnership treaty, have strained ties with China. Experts see signs of worsening relations based on reported patterns and lack of mention of important anniversaries.

Concerns rose as Japan, the United States, and South Korea noted increased military and economic cooperation between North Korea and Russia, diverging from traditional alliances.
