US rapper Macklemore has cancelled his upcoming concert in Dubai due to the United Arab Emirates’ alleged support of the paramilitary force involved in the ongoing crisis in Sudan. The UAE has denied arming the Rapid Support Forces, but UN experts have reported evidence suggesting otherwise. The conflict in Sudan has resulted in over 18,800 deaths and displaced more than 10 million people, with many on the brink of famine. The UAE has been accused of arming the RSF, but has been involved in peace talks to end the fighting.
Macklemore made the decision to cancel the show in solidarity with the people of Sudan and as a boycott of the UAE’s alleged role in the crisis. He has recently shown support for Palestinians amid the Israel-Hamas war, including dedicating a song to a young girl killed in Gaza. The cancellation may jeopardize future shows in the area, but Macklemore believes it is important to take a stand against human rights violations. Other artists scheduled to perform in Dubai are now faced with the question of using their platforms for collective liberation.
Despite efforts to attract A-list performers, Dubai’s tight control over speech has posed challenges for artists, as seen in past instances with US comedian Dave Chappelle.
