Government Takes Steps to Lower Electricity Prices in Pakistan
The Federal Minister for Energy, Awais Leghari, has announced that the government is making efforts to reduce electricity prices in Pakistan. The government is working on issues related to power generation by Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and power theft by Distribution Companies (DISCOs).
Leghari mentioned that talks have been initiated with Chinese companies to explore ways to reduce power tariffs. The aim is to re-profile the debt, convert coal-based plants to locally sourced coal, and phase out older furnace oil plants. These measures are expected to significantly lower the cost of electricity for consumers.
Furthermore, discussions are underway with Chinese bankers for potential investments in Pakistan’s power sector. The government is committed to implementing reforms that will improve the energy landscape in the country, despite challenges such as currency devaluation and high-interest rates.
With strategic planning and international collaborations, Pakistan is moving towards a more sustainable and cost-effective energy future.
